Homemade Wrapping Paper

So we all know I LOVE my spray paint. What else can I possibly use it for? Glad you asked :)

Wrapping Paper!

I have to confess – I’m usually a gift bag kinda girl (and I mean the crumpled up one in the back of the closet someone else gave me with a baby rattle on it and pink tissue paper, which is totally acceptable for Christmas wrap kinda gift bag girl!)  It is one of my crafty down falls that I’m horrible at wrapping presents. They would never hire me at the gift wrapping station.

But this year I was determined to change that. I really wanted some wrapping paper that coordinated with our tree, sort of a burlap feel. I wasn’t having any luck (my little diva suggested the “gorgeous” disney snow princess wrapping paper at Target, but we will save that for her birthday! ) I decided to just buy some plain brown kraft paper and make it myself.

Gift and Paper
I wrapped my present first. Then I pulled a snowflake ornament off the Christmas tree and headed to the garage with some white spray paint.

WARNING: I can’t guarantee that spray paint didn’t somehow get in the nooks and crannies of the wrapping paper and get on the actual present, but since this gift is inside a plain old box it didn’t matter. Just be careful if you’re wrapping something you don’t want spray paint on mmmkay?

I went really lightly over it because I wanted a snowy effect. I followed up immediately because I have no patience once it was completely dry with my white charcoal pencil. I wanted to emphasize the detail and make it look more homemade, but you can skip this if you like.

I tied it with some twine and added a gift tag. Some greenery and a jingle bell top it off.

You can see a part of my Christmas Tablescape in this one.

There you go – 2 presents down approximately 25 or so to go! Better get to spraying!

Where did you find the snowflake jingle bells?? I haven’t been able to find them in any stores and Christmas is right around the corner. :( Please help! Do your bells have the star cutouts on the top half?

    Thank you!

  4. Yesterday, I was spray painting some snowflakes and loved how the newspaper underneath looked, when I removed the snowflake. I think I may have to follow your idea. It seems I am getting nudged. :)

Your wrapping paper turned out great. :)

  5. Well, isn’t that CUTE! What a great idea. I love using brown kraft wrap too, but sometimes the darn tape wants to un-stick… grrr….

Thanks for the tip. Now, I just have to find a snowflake ornie.

  8. I love this idea. I wanted to use the brown craft paper this year but am not happy with how thick it is. I guess I’m looking at shipping paper, I’ll have to look at kraft paper. I love the idea of spray painting the snowflake on.

  12. Hi Kelly – it’s so nice to meet you! I found you through Cozy Little House and am now your newest follower. I love your blog…your creativity and decorating talents are magazine-worthy! You must tell me where you found the iron (?) circles with the candles that are hanging on your wall in a previous post – the one Brenda featured on her blog. Those are gorgeous – even my husband loved them!

I hope you will visit me at my blog and become a follower as well!

  13. I am in love with this idea! The only thing is…I’ve used kraft paper before and found it difficult to work with since it’s so thick. Do you have that problem? We have a little store here that is a lot like The Dollar Tree and it sells plain brown bags with handles…maybe I can try them. Love the snowflake!

  17. So cute! I love seeing pretty wrapping ideas, but I have so much left over paper, that I always feel like I need to use it up first! Maybe in a few years, when all my paper is gone, I can try this! ;)
