I should possibly change the name of this post to Junk Room. As in walk in the door and drop your junk EVERYWHERE! And then some secret fairy comes in the middle of the night and tucks it all away :)
This room leads right to the lake so I have some fun nautical touches in here.
Like these oars, I LOVE old oars and I have a pretty good collection going…but none of them are actually old. I’m always on the hunt for them at vintage stores but rarely see them in my price range.
I ordered these plain unfinished oars from Etsy and distressed and painted them myself. I used that handy Pinterest trick of soaking steel wool in vinegar and then rubbing it on the wood. It gives the wood that old speckly look (not to mention clears your sinuses!)
You can see the speckliness a little better here. Some painters tape and regular old craft paint followed up by a good sanding, and I have myself two old vintagey oars.
I made these pillow shams from IKEA kitchen towels.
The numbered hooks are from Pottery Barn.
That’s actually one of my favorite decorating tips if you like a certain store but it isn’t necessarily in your price range try finding some smaller inexpensive items, like these hooks or throw pillows. The little touches can give you a taste of the expensive style you love.
If you open these cabinet doors you may or may not be buried under a pile of tutus, ballet slippers, life jackets, hats, mittens, soccer balls….let’s just keep them shut, it’s safer…
Originally I thought I needed a pop of color in this room and went with bright green baskets, which I quickly got tired of. Rather than getting new ones, I painted them white and stenciled on the numbers.
Does anyone else notice my tendency to paint everything white? Note to self : only buy white things from now on!
