Alternate titles for this post could be “How not to potty train your kid”
or “Finger painting with poo – a new art form?”
or “How to clean poo out of your carpet and when to give up and have a glass of wine”.
Enthralling stuff huh? This week has been packed with craziness. It’s the first full week of kindergarten, my girlie lost her first tooth, and little man decided it was time to do his business on the potty…well most of his business. The Mr. has suspiciously had meetings or been out of town every night this week, so he has been missing out on all the fun.
I have no fun room makeover to share, no earth shattering DIY project, and not even a yummy recipe to check out. I just have the regular old hilarity and hi-jinx of my everyday life. Check back next week if you want some fun fall decor, but if you are missing the days of toddlers in your house or trying to survive your own and want to commiserate with me read on…
Potty training a boy has proven to be a whole different ball game than my daughter, but he is doing surprisingly well. We had a little mishap in the playroom while I was emptying the dishwasher – he decided the corner seemed like a perfectly good spot to do his business. Which wouldn’t have been bad if he then didn’t realize what a great finger painting medium his business could be! I’ll spare you the photo (somehow I don’t think that it’s Pinterest worthy), but just picture a CSI crime scene…
Now that he has discovered the joy of wearing underwear he refuses to cover it up with pants. Why would you want to cover up your sweet spider man undies? He also refuses to take off these dinosaur rain boots, he is quite the trendsetter.
This was not in the motherhood brochure. :)
When I dreamed about having kids I pictured snuggling with a sweet smelling newborn, reading peacefully to my ever attentive toddler and making home cooked well balanced meals that my adoring children gobbled up…
and then I woke up and smelled the spit up! In real life my kids are running around with peanut butter on their faces and grass in their hair, leaping off the couches and telling me my cooking is “ucky bucky” (in the sweetest voice imaginable).
Being a mommy is not for the faint of heart, it is filled with dirty jobs, hard days and long hours. It’s also filled with snuggles, giggles and amazing firsts and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Like your first visit from the tooth fairy. After surviving the traumatic experience of losing her tooth and realizing that no, there in fact won’t be a hole in your mouth for the rest of your life, (somehow I failed to explain this right the first time around!) a visit from the tooth fairy is pretty great.
This is her “what??? I’m going to need dentures at the age of 5?” face.
Kindergarten and a lost tooth all in one week? Pretty soon she is going to want to borrow the car, I can’t handle it!
I know we all have hard days as moms, days you want to cry, pull your hair out, or lock yourself in the pantry and eat chocolate. Some days I feel one step away from needing a straight jacket and a padded room. Those are the days I make sure to go in their rooms at night and watch them sleep and touch their soft skin and kiss their foreheads and thank God for the blessing and privilege of getting to spend my days with them. I pray to be a better mom the next day, listen more, yell less and enjoy all the little moments.
After all, some day I’ll totally be laughing at them when their kids are spreading “you know what” on the walls.
So this week my paints and brushes remained put away, my sink was filled with dirty dishes, my laundry room looked like a bomb site, we ate cold pizza for breakfast, and I spent no less than 120 hours hanging out with little man in the bathroom. And that’s OK. I will cherish every big smile and “I did it!!”. I will cherish every “I missed you today mom!” I will even try to cherish cleaning up the legos for the thousandth time, but I draw the line at the finger painting…wish me luck!
