Coffee Table Style – living room sneak peek

I’m still waiting on my new tile for my fireplace, which means my living room redo is coming along in excruciating baby steps. Let’s just say patience is not my strong suit, since I typically decide I want to change out my tile and then just go get a sledge hammer with no plan in mind….

but I’m taking it slooooooow for once, which is making pulling the room together hard.

I mean, how am I supposed to make major life altering decisions about throw pillows when I don’t know what my fireplace is going to look like!? We all know how life altering a good throw pillow can be…

Coffee Table Styling

I’m giving you just a sneak peek of one area of the room that I’ve got down (I think) – my ottoman. I got this fun new tray from HomeGoods. I love anything galvanized and it’s kinda perfect with my new barstools.

Coffee Table

I scored this blue jar there too and dumped some of our shell collection from various vacations in it.

A wooden table

Oh and you guys! I’ve also been meaning to show you how I roughed up the legs of my ottoman to look a bit more rustic and cottagey. I did this in the fall and just never got around to showing you, but here is a close up…

A wooden bench

I went to town with my electric palm sander and then added a coat of warm honey colored stain over top. I left a bit of the original dark finish to give it a more rustic look. You can check out the darker more modern before here.

Coffee table styled with books and plants

This nautical thingy is from my Joss and Main sale, it was originally a light blue and I added a bit of Napoleaonic Blue Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to it to brighten it up.

And can we talk about the fact that this plant has been alive in my home for 3 whole weeks? What, what?! Setting world records over here left and right, keeping plants alive, not knocking down my fireplace myself, it’s a whole new zen me :)

Pretty soon my house will be spotless, I won’t have paint permanently embedded under my nails and my kids will be eating their veggies…ok so my world is not quite that zen, but a girl can dream!

Coffee Table Books

My favorite art book (I love the Beatles and Sir Paul is my fave), my favorite cookbook (if you are ever in Chelsea MI you have to eat at the Common Grill), a copy of Celebrating Every Day Life, and Miss Mustard Seed’s book.

You can see the hints of color that are starting to pop up in the background – stay tuned…

and cross your fingers that my tile shows up soon!

Oh, and of course my favorite coffee table accessory of them all…

Childs feet

after all, what good is a beaten up rustic cottagey ottoman if you can’t dance on top of it? :)

The problem is an issue that too few folks are speaking intelligently about.

I am very happy that I came across this in my search for something relating to this.

  3. Love! But how do you keep your little one’s hands off the décor? I have a 4 year old and would so love to have nice things on display!

    1. They do pretty good about knowing what they can touch and what they can’t, it helps that we have a playroom that is sort of a free for all ha :)

  4. Can we just talk for a moment about the fact that there is a Chelsea, MI??? How did I not know this? All the more reason I must visit Michigan! Love your coffee table styling I can’t wait to see the whole room!!

  5. Thanks for the sneak peek of the living room. Love all the new colors. Can’t wait to see the fireplace makeover. We are getting a new Home Goods at our outdoor mall, The Avenue. Sure beats driving to Orlando every week! I’ve been thinking about getting a leather ottoman, also. My husband treats our coffee table as one anyway, and I’m getting a little tired of touching it up all the time. Love all your creative ideas, Kelly. I love all your paint colors. You have inspired me to redo our tropical home into a beach house. I live 5 minutes from the beach. Now, how do I break it to my husband? Any suggestions?

  6. Kelly thanks for the peak, the coffee table looks great. You did a great job with the sander. What a score at HG, never a disappointment. Hope your tile arrives soon.

    1. I know I saw that! We are such twinners, well I wish my house looked like yours ha :) I commented on your blog about our twin jars, but I’m not sure it works every time I comment on there? Well anyways know I’m reading faithfully :) Love the new rug in the family room!

  9. The room looks really pretty. I love all the pretty blue accents. I’ve been wondering about those tiles. Can’t wait to see the fireplace. Also, I may have missed this in a previous post, but where did you find your ottoman? My husband would like us to switch out our coffee table for an ottoman in our family room but I hate to give up the storage. Yours would give us both.

    1. Hi Becky, sorry to say I got the ottoman at a clearance sale at a local furniture store so that’s not really helpful. They too have a version at PB that’s really similar but it’s pretty pricey. It is really nice to have a spot to put up your feet :)

  10. Lookin good!!!! Can’t wait to see fireplace and paint color!
