Beach Condo Kitchen Makeover

The extreme home (beach condo) makeover reveal continues today with the kitchen. These have got to be my favorite before and afters yet! Our mission of making all things light and bright really began in here. Since the floor plan is so open, there was just no way we could make the rest of the space work with the sort of purple/pink/beige countertop situation. Thankfully, the cabinets were white and in great shape so this was a pretty easy fix, minus trying to schedule counter top guys and tile guys to be here within our 4 day trip down to Florida. Here is the before:

and after:

What a change right? My Dad thought the kitchen was totally acceptable and didn’t see the reason for changing anything (men!), but I talked my mom into taking a perfectly innocent quick trip to Home Depot to “just look” at their counter top and backsplash selection. Kind of like how you go to “just look” at puppies…and end up with a new family member.

We were there for a total of 15 minutes before we zeroed in on the perfect Sileston white counters (the color is Blanco Maple) and this beautiful grayish blue subway tile. We had Home Depot scheduled to come measure for the counters about 30 minutes later even though they hadn’t even closed on the condo yet.

The Mr. will say this scenario sounds familiar as I already had our wedding venue booked before he even put the ring on my finger, but what can I say my mom and I are pro planners! ;)

We have this weird/magic ability when we are together to make decisions in 30 seconds or less, decor decisions that is, now ask us where to eat and we will discuss restaurants for 45 minutes or more…or shoes, we can talk shoe options for far too long.

Before again, it’s hard to tell in these photos but the countertop was almost a purple color:

And After:

One of the best decisions we made was to extend their little island in here. There was a tiny island here before with no place to sit. The front door and kitchen window of their condo looks out over the intercoastal and is such a neat view. See?

A bridge over a body of water

My kids especially love watching the bridge go up and down every half hour to let the large boats through. The extended island gave them the perfect spot to enjoy their coffee with the view.

Grey subway tile

The grey subway tile breaks up all the white and provides the perfect backdrop for some warm wood toned accessories and of course a little pop of the teal that we have running through the whole condo.

We found these slightly darker teal backless stools for the island from Pier One. We used a very monochromatic color scheme through the whole condo because it isn’t a huge space and this made it feel larger and also helped it flow nicely. Using different shades of blue and teal kept it from feeling boring.

This was definitely the spot we spent the most money in (or I spent my parent’s money in, my Dad would tell you I perfected the art of spending his money as a teenager…) but it really set the tone for the rest of the condo, so it was worth the expense.

Although knowing him, I’m pretty sure his chief concern will be whether there is a beer in the fridge for him :)

Kitchen and Beach

Oh and the previous owners left this little chalkboard here, so you know I couldn’t resist leaving my mark!

If you missed any of the previous before and after beach condo posts, you can see the living room here and the master bedroom/bath here.

Stay tuned for more coming up!

  2. You’d actually think we spent more than a New York minute pulling this all together !! So happy how it all turned out!! ?

  3. Once again, a beautiful job. I love the back splash tiles! Such a beautiful transformation. The kitchen feels happy now.

  4. It looks beautiful!!!! Could you possibly provide a link for the subway tile you used for the backsplash?

  5. Love, love, love it, Kelly & Mom! What an awesome makeover! Everything looks so light, bright, fresh & clean! The grey subway tile is perfect! I noticed you cleaned the tile grout! My hub says that is an obsession with me! He has to leave the house when he sees me get out my grout brush! Just between us, I think one day he will cave in for wood flooring!

  6. You got it just right!! Looks so fresh and appealing. I wish you could talk hubby into changing our counters and backsplash. They are still the way we bought them — turquoise. I like turquoise but not as a counter and backsplash. The former owners had custom cabinets put in — they are decent but in order to remove the counters and backsplash the cabinets would have to be torn out :-( MAJOR project. Well, I love what you’ve done. Now, are you on the Atlantic or Gulf side??

  7. Perfect! Light and bright is perfect for the beach. Apparently the heavy, ornate, palm tree furniture salesperson was very busy. We often rent condos in Myrtle Beach, SC and it is the exact same decor. I always spend half my time thinking of ways to make them look like actual beach condos. Now, I can just imagine your decor and pretend!
