Florida House Dining Room Decor

Do you want to know the absolute best car to power shop for an entire house with? A two seater mini cooper. Yep, this is what my mom and I were working with…I mean, why take a truck when you could play your own personal game of Tetris with throw pillows and accessories?

Imagine a clown car, but instead of dozens of clowns popping out, end tables, artwork and throw pillow after throw pillow. I actually have no idea how we even made it home and we definitely got a few looks from some construction dudes in the Lowe’s parking lot. Whatever, we made it work!

Today the tour continues with the formal dining room and man was this room formal. The light fixture in here was made out of camel heads? My daughter however loved it and asked me if she could have it for her room at the new house…that would be a no…

I have to give credit to my mom for this room she had this table set and light fixture hanging up in here already when I got down there. My dad and his friend also pulled down all the chair railing and put up the more casual bead board instead.

Oh, and full props to my non-crafty mom, who channeled her inner Martha for these sea glass bottles. She grabbed a bunch of these bottles at a flea market and hit them with that new sea glass spray paint. Have you seen that stuff? I hadn’t tried it before, but they turned out so cool!

You may notice the odd window placement in here, if you are OCD about symmetry like I am it may make your eye twitch a bit.

We tried to address the offset thing with this tall shelving unit in the corner. Which I think helped solve the situation a bit.

We also brought in some colorful prints and another round basket to mimic the round light fixture and ground the table.

It turned out so pretty in here!

  1. Hi Kelly, I’m a new neighbor near your Mom. A week ago we met as she was walking the dogs. She was nice enough to give me a tour of her home. We’re also going with a light coastal feel of blues, greens, white and grey. Anyway, she gave me your blog. She has almost the exact same floor plan as our house 2 doors down. We’re currently in the middle of remodeling. I love your tips. We have the same crazy window and I just bought a tall cabinet from Palmaro Furniture on University. (They have great coastal furniture, pictures, rugs and accessories) Now I know exactly where I’ll place my cabinet. I hope we can eventually meet and you can give me a few more tips. Especially after we get started on the new kitchen cabinets, plus we’re moving some walls around. Good luck with your lake house. I saw the pictures, looks like you’re near the end! :)

    1. OH shoot I was just there last week, would have been great to meet you! My mom took me to Palmaro – so many pretty things! Good luck with your renovations, hopefully I’ll meet you next time I’m visiting.

  2. Hi, I just discovered your blog because of the Top Sail paint color by SW, that is the color I just painted my living room and I am in love. I wanted some advice though, I live in South Florida, so do you think I could put a navy blue sofa and still have the light and airy feel in the living room. I am currently obsessed with said color for a sofa, but I am more in love with the Top Sail. I haven’t gotten the sofa yet. But I am very close and would hate to make such an expensive mistake.
Thanks in advance for your time.

    1. Well first if you are obsessed and love it I say go for it, but it is a strong deep color to still have an airy feel. I think if you had lots of light colored throw pillows and other lighter items in the room it could work. I tend to be safe with big purchases like couches and go neutral and bring the color in with accessories. So that could be a thought, a lighter couch with navy pillows?

  3. Wow talk about power shopping! What a cute room! You two must have great fun doing these projects.. I said it before and I’ll say it again, your a lucky girl!!!!

  4. Great job. I have brought home a lot of large items in my Mini Cooper including blinds, rugs and large mirrors. My hubby has a truck, but doesn’t always enjoy my design shopping trips. Looking forward to seeing more of your folks FLA home, and your new build.

  5. I love it!! I can’t believe I didn’t know about sea glass spray paint. Going out to find it NOW!!

  6. Looks fantastic! I flew to my BFF’s house in Florida after they moved to Melbourne from Franklin TN! She had a very traditional dark winter feel in her home there and we literally transformed her new home in 6 days! It was exhausting! We went for the light coastal vibe too and did well at Kirklands, himegoods and marshalls and tj maxx!
She also had a funky window in her dining room, and being Libra’s it drove us both crazy! I ended up getting some long curtains and put them on both ends. Hid the wall and some of the window on the right. But you can’t see through it so it looks great….and even, but still lets in all the light!

I live on the lake in GA so I’m a big fan of seeing your lake remodel!! Our house was born in 1971, by a dock company! We love it and it’s fun redoing things! I love your vision! Look forward to seeing the house project!

  7. I love all the changes. I live in Bradenton where the Manatee River is so they must be close to me. Just in case you don’t know there is a great Home Goods store in Sarasota on Bee Ridge Road. I like it better than the one in University Parkway.

  8. Great job! My husband and I are thinking of buying a second house on the water in Florida and reading your blog makes me want to do it even more! The wall color is beautiful. I think I would have left the chair rail, so I’d have more wall color, but the bead board definitely goes with your overall look. I showed my hubby the condo before and after pictures to show him how ‘easy’ it would be to transform a space and now I need to reveal the house to him.

  9. I also think that the room is extremely attractive and comfortable looking and admire your ability to pull it together so quickly. Can you tell me your source for the tall shelf unit? It is exactly what I need!

    1. By the way, I wouldn’t worry for one second about the asymmetry of the window. It may be distracting to you in the design process, but when their friends come over to enjoy your parents’ company and have a meal, no one will even notice. The warmth of your family, the cheerful ambiance, the conversation, the food…because let’s face it, there’s always the food ;)…. will be what people remember.

  10. Love it Kelly – you both nailed it! You’re right, time will enrich this decor and the place will become more cozy. Personally I would be out on that boat most of the time anyway. ? Some of your pictures are absolutely magazine quality. You have a great eye for photography.

  11. I love everything about this room – the wall color and beadboard, the clean uncluttered look, the tall shelving and just its overall styling. You and your mom are doing great in achieving that light, simple coastal vibe. Looking forward to seeing more.

  12. You are right about the window, especially in Florida. Good idea though to place a tall shelving unit next to it. I’m impressed with the bottles. Have to look for that paint and some bottles. The room is very bright and coastal. My favorite! Must admit, I’m not a fan of the light fixture or the hardwood floors. Ceramic tile flooring would be a better fit for coastal I think.

    1. Hey Doreen, they have tile flooring in most of the house but the previous owners installed this bamboo in the bedrooms and this dining room. I actually like the warmth it adds but to each their own!

  13. Such a light and pretty redesign – definitely more of a beachy vibe. But about that camel light fixture for your daughter’s room…. how about spray painting the whole thing a high gloss turquoise or pink or whatever she’s into? Then it becomes quirky retro chic (maybe!!??)? Just a thought – certainly it’s not for public consumption, but maybe for a little girl’s fantasy room! ;)

    1. Hey Jean this is actually an incredibly expensive light fixture (who knew!) so my mom was able to sell it for a very good price :)

  14. I think that OCD is rampant. It would drive me nuts — I wonder if hubby would tear out the window and extend it. :-( The room looks so much nicer – light and bright. I don’t know why people want those dark heavy colors in Florida. It’s the SUNSHINE state!! And please let us know more about that sea glass spray. Where do you get it and how do you use it. Inquiring minds (nosey) wants to know.

  15. I thought I was the only one with symmetry OCD. I love the new decor! I am headed to the same location today to see my beautiful daughter, handsome son-in-law and “cute as a button” grandson. Maybe I will see you out shopping! Just a suggestion for the symmetry issue — a long and narrow word sign or scripture to fill up the wall space. If you want to change it up in the future.

    1. Well they have only lived there 2 weeks so it is staged and what we pulled together in 3 days. I’m sure it will continue to feel more homey as they make it their home.
