Friday Feels – Podcasts and Planners

Welcome to another Friday Feels where I share what I’m “feeling” this week. This post may contain affiliate links.

I had to laugh last week, because I got a comment on the blog wanting to know if our pup Charlie made the transition to the new house since you haven’t seen him on the blog much. If you watch my instagram stories, you will know why you haven’t seen him lately – because he is here, in his kennel.

A dog sitting on a bed

Pouting.

And, he is not leaving until I bring his kids back from wherever that loud yellow thing takes them off to everyday.

It’s like he thinks I finally made good on my threat to sell the kids on eBay after one too many of their shennaginans. ;)  Have you ever seen such a sad face?

Thankfully, he perks back up when they come home at the end of the day, and there is a 20 minute happy dance every afternoon. Not gonna lie, I do a happy dance too. The house is still a little too quiet for me. Which brings me to what I’m feeling this week and my new found love of Podcasts. I’m not a huge TV watcher, but I do love listening to something while I’m cleaning, doing laundry, shooting photos, editing and running errands. Some of my favorites to listen to lately:

Blogger/Home Decor

Chris Loves Julia – One of my favorite blogs. I love their style, and they are so funny and real.

Young House Love Has A Podcast – This is a no brainer. Jon and Sherry are hilarious and full of great tips and info.

Spiritual/All around good to know stuff –

Jen Hatmaker – She interviews really different and inspiring women for this podcast, and the conversations are heartfelt and often hilarious.

Shauna Niequist – Full of interesting guests and great conversations.

Mystery/Real Life Stories –

Serial – I may be the last person on earth to listen to this, but it was so addicting! There are 2 seasons that each tell a true story with each episode being a different chapter, so be sure to start with Season 1 Episode 1.

This American Life – This is a weekly public radio show, and I love listening to all the interesting stories about our society and culture.

Do you have a favorite podcast recommendation for me? Leave me a comment below so I can add them to my list!

In other news, my new camera and I are starting to get along, and I was able to catch this shot of our family room this week. I feel like you can finally see some of the woodworking details in this photo. I’ll keep working on it :)

Oh and lastly, I got a few comments and emails about these cute planners you spied in my laundry room post earlier this week.

Laundry room with mail

They are from Rifle Paper Co and they are my favorite planners, the orange is a 2017 pattern and the black is the new 2018 one, but they come in several pretty patterns.

If you are old school like me and like to make lists and see your whole week ahead, they are perfect. Find yours here.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Hi there! I was wondering if you can tell me what wood flooring is in that beautiful living room? We are building a house and I would like to consider that flooring! Thank you!

    1. Hi Carly head to my FAQ page and you can find all the info. I also suggest watching my instagram stories that are saved in my highlights. There is one labeled wood floors where I share a ton of info on them. thanks!

  2. I️ love your sectional and have been looking for something exactly like it. Can you tell me where you got I️t?
    Thanks!

  3. I LOVE your home(s) past and present. When I started following you, you were just embarking on building your new lake home and I watched your progess with excited anticipation for you and, let’s be honest, a hint of jealousy thrown in. It has always been a dream to live on a lake. I was a lucky to grow up with the lake life – I am also from Michigan and my parents had a cottage on Lake Charlevoix. The best times in my life. My adult dreams are coming to fruition…my husband and I bought a little cottage this past spring with plans to eventually build on the beautiful, peaceful lakefront . We got our house ready to sell this summer and as I write this, I am taking a break from packing our recently sold home, into a small rental, all set to go with building our dresm lake home! You will be a constant inspiration in my process for sure!

As for Podcasts – obsessed might be an under-exaggeration for my love of them. These are my weekly musts:

    ~Juicy Scoop with Heather McDonald
~Watch What Crappens (comedic breakdown of the housewives
~For Crying Out Loud (parenting podcast with Lynette Carolla and Stefanie Wilder Taylor)
~Attack Each Day: The Harbaughs Podcast (some football talk but mostly motivational)
~My Favorite Murder (also obsessed with true crime, as are hosts Karen Kikgariff and Georgia Hardstark, who put their unique spin on the macob)
~Sword and Scale (a bi-momthly truly fascinating, true crime podcast-warning though, some episodes aren’t for everyone)

  4. Decorating Tips & Tricks ~ podcast! Hosts are me, Kelly from My Soulful Home, Anita from Cedar Hill Farmhouse and Yvonne from Stone Gable. Loads of tips & lots of laughs! Give DTT a listen. Saw your post on FB and had to chime in! I LOVE podcasts too and listen to Joe the Gardener for gardening advice.

  5. Stunning and beautiful room…. I feel i missed something, which I never have time for… is this a new room?
I never have time to catch up with your blog. The room is breathtaking…Love it. Can I ask what size the windows are in the fireplace room..looking out to the lake? Can you share the brand. I am in the middle of picking windows out and trying to decide. All my best.

    1. Hi Roxanne we moved into a new house and I’ve been slowly revealing all the rooms. You can check out my new house tour to see any rooms you may have missed. I’m not home to measure the windows right now but the brand is NorthStar and I’m guessing they are 8 ft tall 5 ft wide? Thanks

  6. Love your home! I just wanted to share some podcasts that I listen to: The Simple Show with Tsh O; What should I read next with Anne Bogel; the minimalist podcast; Jamie Ivey (her husband is the worship leader at our church). Thanks for sharing all the details of your home building! You are Blessed!!

  7. Oh you DEFINITELY need to listen to The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey!! She has been podcasting for over 3 years now, and yes, Jen has been a guest on her show. But she has SO MANY more wonderful women with such a range of stories and experiences. You also need to follow her Insta-stories too, she is best!!

  8. Beautiful room, I love seeing how everything is coming together! I also love Chris loves Julia and yhl and have to recommend The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe. They are fascinating!

  9. If that was room with that view I wouldn’t get a thing done all day! I’d just want to sit there and gaze out the windows! It’s just beautiful. I love the look of bare windows but I get spooked at night so I can’t do them in my home! I have an active imagination and always think I see something lurking! Lol!??

  10. Serial got me hooked on true crime podcasts too and now I can’t get enough. Some of my favorites are Accused, In the Dark, True Crime Garage and my absolute very favorite – My Favorite Murder. ?

  11. Your home is so beautiful! You’re so talented, and your posts are always authentic and funny!! I love almost all of the podcasts you mentioned, but I hadn’t heard of Jen Hatmaker, so I am going to check her out!

I love the podcast Invisibilia (someone may have already mentioned it). The whole podcast is about the intangible things in life that influence and affect us. It’s incredibly interesting. I would start with the episode that is titled something like “Becoming Batman” it is all about how expectations affect us. So interesting!!

I also love Reply All–this one is just totally nerdy about the internet, but there is something I love about the two hosts. I would recommend starting with the episode titled Shipped to Timbuktu (or something about Timbuktu).

Thanks for your amazing blog!! You’re inspiring!!

  12. Yes I am back! I can sleep well tonight knowing your Charlie is alive and well with you and yours in your new lovely home. We are presently in our brick 1 room 200 year old brick school setting on a country corner surrounded by 2 working dairies ( 1 computerised) and miles of corn fields. Looking west towards the Adironacks and east the green mountains of VT.
I do NPR but will check out podcasts. Training an old dog new tricks here and also plan to check out your great looking day planers. But here comes the big BUT! Inquiring minds need to know—-

When we are not here in upstate NY, we are at our East coast of Florida home which segues into–“How did your parents West coast Florida home survive Irma?” Friends and neighbors have confirmed all is well with ours. I sincerely hope their beautiful home is waiting for them and in one piece.

I think this about does it, I will sit back and enjoy your Friday feelings…

  13. What a beautiful home! Even if you don’t like history, you will love The History Chicks podcast. My daughter and I are hooked!

  14. Peaceful, welcoming, lovely … and that’s just the laundry room. I can’t even start to describe how beautiful your living room is. Podcasts – Stuff you should know: facts about random topics, Judge John Hodgeman: civil cases brought before a comedian judge, Revisionist History: surprising takes on things you thought you knew, and Spawned: Moms talking about mom stuff.

  15. Hello Kelly. The photo you shared of your family room makes it look pretty phenomenal to me. I can’t imagine how much better the photography can be, but it will be fun to see what you believe best captures the in-person experience.

As for podcasts, I can’t get enough of QI: Quite Interesting/A weekly podcast in which the QI researchers share their most interesting recent discoveries. I also thoroughly enjoy History Podcasts from History Extra (a BBC production). I’m waiting with bated breath to find out what the guys behind the recently shutdown Rick and Paul Heal the World podcast (I really miss their unique blend of personality and humor covering current events) will do as a comeback.

I just realized that all my favorite podcasts are British productions.

    Cheers, Ardith

  16. Another blogger I follow recommened the podcast Up and Vanished. I diid all my fall cleaning while l listened to it.

  17. Thanks for the new podcast recommendations! I heard Shauna Niequist on Oprah’s Super Souls Sunday podcast (check that one out!) and she was great. I also love Young House Love!

Some others I listen to are:

The Daily – New York Times. It’s a great 15-20 daily news podcast. I listen as I’m getting ready for work. It keeps me informed on the big news stories.

NPR – Fresh Air – interesting guests and book recommendations

NPR – How I Built This – stories of entrepreneurs

NPR – WOW in the World – podcast for kids! My two girls, age 6 and 9 love it. They make learning fun!

    OPRAH Super Soul Sunday podcast

    The Good Life Project

    Enjoy!

  18. My top ones are God Centered Mom (the last two epis were phenomenal), Chris Loves Julia, & Happier with Gretchen Rubin.

  19. S Town was a VERY interesting podcast. Also Missing Richard Simmons. And for some fun if you watch any of the Real Housewives show, Bitch Sesh is HILARIOUS! Enjoy!

    1. We cut the cord and don’t have cable anymore so I don’t get to watch Housewives wah, but I do listen to Bitch Sesh sometimes to feel like I’m still in the loop :)

  20. How on earth do you ever get anything done. I would be sitting there staring at the water all-day-long!! This room is so stunning. I can’t wait to see what you come up with for the holidays! Look forward to each and every post!

  21. LOVE LOVE LOVE your house! In terms of podcasts…The Happy Hour w/ Jamie Ivey is fantastic. Jamie Ivey is a friend of Jen Hatmakers (Jamie had the podcast first though!). They used to go to the same church, etc. Jamie is great at interviewing, and has really amazing Christian women on her podcast. It’s really a MUST HEAR!! She sometimes mentions other good podcasts, and another one I may have heard from her was NPR’s “How I Built This”. There they interview people who have built incredibly successful companies, like Sara Blakely w/ Spanx, and Kate Spade, just to name a few. Next to Jamie Ivey, it’s probably my favorite podcast.

  22. Wow….enough said……wow.

…but I will add….?….there was an elderly couple that I got to know years ago and they lived on a road right across the road from Lake Erie. Whenever I’d go and visit Howard and Marilyn , as soon as I walked into their living room, with a view similar to yours….I would find a peace that just washed over me and settled in for the rest of the visit. Alas, they’re in their 80’s now and earlier this month, they moved into town to one of those seniors condos…..there goes my peaceful moment…..whenever I had an overwhelming day, I used to say to my husband…..oh, how I need a Marilyn day……
Do you feel that when you sit in your chair and look out at your view?

    1. My husband always says after coming home from a long day it’s like being on vacation the minute he walks in the door. Something about the water is definitely very calming.

  23. I just live your home and style. Gorgeous!

If you’re into true crime with a hint of comedy I highly recommend my favorite murder

  24. Your blog has been a favorite for many years and your new home is off the charts in beauty. However – isn’t there always an ‘however’ – my 81 year old eyes would really appreciate a somewhat darker print. Enjoy your blessed life.

    1. Jean, you read my mind! Even when I enlarge the print, the color is light which makes it very difficult to see……. and I’m 20 years younger than you!!

      1. Hi Barb, ugh this has been the bane of my existence! It seems to be hardcoded into my site and no matter how many times I try to change the color it doesn’t work. I may need to break down and hire someone to see if they can fix it. Sorry for the eye strain, it drives me nuts too!

    2. Hi Jean, I know it drives me crazy! I have tried to change it many times I can’t figure out why it keeps reverting to the light grey color. I may need to hire someone to code it differently, I’ll keep working on it thanks!

  25. That view never gets old Kelly! It’s stunning. Poor Charlie… ? .. thx for sharing. Have a great weekend ?

  26. I so love your ur blog!!!! Can you tell me the plants you keep on your mantle? I love the clean look!!!!

  27. Your living room photo is insane! You designed the house beautifully!

I listen to The Nerdist with Chris Hardwick. He has all sorts of different guests and even though sometimes I don’t think I would want to listen to a certain guest because I don’t really know them, I find they are the most interesting to listen to.
