Friday Feels – Yurt Life and Canada

Welcome to another Friday Feels where I share what I’m “feeling” this week. This post may contain affiliate links.

So I’m not a travel blogger by any means, but we road tripped with the kids to go camping for fall break. It was actually so fun that I had to share a bit of our trip. I say “actually” because I’m not big on camping. I love the outdoors – hiking, bonfires, smore’s, I’m all about it, but then I want a hot shower and a warm bed at the end of the day. Thankfully we weren’t totally roughing it because we stayed in a yurt! Think glorified tent with heat, bunkbeds and a mini-fridge, this I could handle.

Yurt Camping New York

It was pretty cute inside.

We stayed at 4 Mile Creek State Park in New York. It’s right on the border of the U.S. and Canada. Our campsite was on the shore of Lake Ontario and it was gorgeous!

You really can’t beat cooking by the fire at night while listening to the waves against the shore.

The campground was a 15 minute drive from Niagara Falls and the Niagara Gorge hiking trails. It was an absolutely beautiful area to hike.

We did a 7 mile route which was possibly one too many miles for our kiddos. We ended up carrying them the last mile on our backs, talk about a good workout.

We couldn’t leave without checking out Niagara Falls too.

After 3 days of yurt life, we (ok maybe just me) were ready for a hot shower and something a little more comfortable than sleeping on the bottom bunk. We headed to Toronto!

The kids had a great time at the Ripley’s Aquarium and the CN Tower, but both agreed the camping part of our trip was the highlight.

Now the Mr. has grand ideas of RV-ing across the country next fall…

I can’t say enough about this gorgeous area and it was great to unplug from the world. This will definitely go down as one of our favorite vacations ever and it was totally affordable. You can find more info on the park we stayed at here and the yurt was only $85 a night.

Oh and I did a few Instagram stories on our trip and got a ton of direct messages about this sweatshirt.

It’s from Old Navy and so so soft and comfy, find your’s here!

I snagged this one for our trip too!

Also if you are in the market for new running shoes these are the comfiest shoes ever and they look cute with jeans for running errands and stuff too.

We will be working on fall cleanup around here this weekend. We have been putting off pulling our dock out of the water and now it’s going to be in the 40’s this weekend, so it should be a fun time to hop in the lake, oops! Any volunteers to come help??

Happy weekend!

  1. Totally random question, but you look like you have long legs like me. Where do you find jeans, like the ones in the last photo? Looks like you had a fabulous vacation!

    1. Hi Lori, those are from American Eagle actually! They come in long and they are usually around $40 :) I’m 5’9 and it’s been a lifesaver not to spend a zillion dollars on jeans that I wear playing with my kids. I also have some Joe’s Jeans that run long but those are $$ and I typically save those to wear out. Thanks!

  2. Looks like a great time!!

I have a question in regards to photography. I noticed a photo with the hubs and kiddos and your husband looks around 5’8″. Then another photo of the two of you, he looks 6’8″. I would love to know how you did this? I’m 5’4″ and a little overweight, so if I take a picture like the second photo I was referencing, I’ll look so much better in photos. I’m really not overweight, just under height. lol

    1. HI Charlene, I think the only difference is my daughter took the photo vs me. So the one where he looks taller was taken at a lower angle bc she is shorter than me? He is actually about 6 ft in real life, but that’s the only thing I can think of!

  3. Awesome family memories were made this trip I’m sure! Thanks for sharing , your photography is beautiful as always! Love the sweatshirts too! I’m really feeling the Friday Feels! ❤️

  4. Good thing I subscribe to your blog…..I live in Youngstown and I no idea that 4 mile had yurts to rent. Fun fact that most are unaware of but the creeks in the area all have mile names of different amounts. It’s the distance from the castle at Fort Niagara. I consider myself fortunate to grow up in the Lewiston/Youngstown area and it’s great to hear when guests from out of town enjoy the area.

    1. Oh my gosh we drove right through Youngstown and the homes there were stunning!! Love that area so much, I wanted to drive through all day but my kids weren’t as interested in cute houses ha :)

  5. I’m with ya on the “Roughing It” aspect of camping . . . NOT!! I too want a soft bed and a hot shower each night! But it looks beautiful! I’ve never been to that part of the country but I must add it to my list!! So glad you had a great time! Blessings from Missouri!

  6. Mike and I want to go up to that area this year so this is perfectly timed. I didn’t know they had the option to stay in yurts up there! I am going to have to look into it. Thank you for posting this. Great photos!

  7. You were in my neck of the woods! We live about 30 minutes away just outside of Buffalo. The Niagara Region is especially beautiful in the Fall! My kids loved Ripley’s Aquarium too, so much to see! Also, my window boxes are still going strong thanks to your fabulous tips a few years back!!!

  8. I like the outdoors but I like my creaturely comforts. Hot shower ranks right up there along with a comfy bed. I guess being without my kitchen items is roughing it. :-( But I love adventures and hiking. It’s great that you’re taking these kinds of vacations with the kiddos. Have a great weekend and think full waders for the lake. xoxo
