Coastal Kitchen Makeover

Hey guys, I’m back from vacation and it was so great to see the sunshine, the beach, and oh yeah my parents! We had amazing weather, and I feel like 6 and 10 years old may be the sweet spot of traveling with kids. For once, it didn’t feel like I needed a vacation after the vacation with the kiddos. We had such a great time that I waited until the last morning before our flight to shoot my parent’s house (mainly because we were packed up and my kids’ explosion of stuff wasn’t everywhere).

Coastal Kitchen Makeover

I grabbed a $15 tripod from Walmart down in Florida rather than try to pack mine, and 5 shots in, the weight of my wide angle lens snapped the tripod right off. Thankfully I was able to catch my camera before it hit the floor. Ugh, it was such a bummer! I did manage to rig the broken tripod slightly, so things aren’t as sharp as I want them to be, but I don’t want to leave you hanging on this coastal kitchen makeover any longer.

Just like squint and blur your eyes a bit and pretend these are sharp photos or you know have a glass of wine before reading this post and everything will look better ;)

Ok let me remind you of the before again –

A kitchen with a wood floor

and after! Gah, how much fun is this transformation?

A kitchen with white cabinets and a dining room table

If you remember we decided to paint the existing cabinets, because we didn’t want to have to pull up all the wood floors and they turned out so much better than we imagined.

A kitchen with a sink and a window

We removed the upper cabinets on this side of the kitchen and it opened the space up SO much. We added this pretty glazed blueish grey subway tile (from Home Depot) and took it all the way to the ceiling.

My mom is loving her new open shelves and her collection of blue toned fiesta wear is a fun pop of color.

We replaced the dark green granite counters with this Quartz from Home Depot. We also added this curved top so we could get bar seating at the counter. We couldn’t just go straight across because of the window placement, but this curve was the perfect compromise.

A kitchen island with stools

We found these cute bar stools that swivel at a local store in FL. They work perfect because they don’t take up too much visual space like stools with backs would have.

The other big change was this kitchen office area over here, here’s the before –

The after – we changed it into a little bar area which has been great when my parent’s entertain or when their grandkids are bouncing up and down all over their newly renovated home and they need a little liquid patience…

We originally planned to have wine shelves underneath that cabinet, but last minute we added a tv instead. My mom loves to watch the Today show in the morning while she is having coffee and emptying the dishwasher, etc. So, this was a good spot for it. The bracket needs to be moved down a bit, so the tv is more centered but we can’t figure out how, ha!

A few of you noticed the tone of the floor changed in my last post about the house. It’s a long story, but they had a termite problem in one section of the house that they had treated and the company used the wrong product that made their floors buckle up in the kitchen. Because the house is 20 years old the only way to fix it was to have them completely refinished. It was kind of a happy accident because they were able to just put a clear satin coat on it and get rid of the yellow tone and really let the beauty of the wood shine.

So, that’s the new kitchen! Once again the power of paint never ceases to amaze me. It’s so much brighter and lighter in here.

  1. Beautiful!

    What color are the chairs?
    What color are the walls?
Where did you get the lamp over the dining room?

    :)

    1. I have a source list right at the bottom of the post with all the info, if you search coastal dining room on my blog you will find the light fixture – thanks!

  2. Would you be able to send me a video of this kitchen makeover? The layout is very similar to mine and I have been struggling trying to figure out how to use the layout and make it look beautiful like this one instead of doing a complete remodel which I just cannot afford. I absolutely love this look and it’s exactly what I’m looking for. Your help is extremely appreciated.

    1. HI I’m back in Michigan so I can’t do a video right now but there is a tour of this space saved on my hi light real on instagram stories I think!

  3. They have really similar stools in Wayfair – Carmen Teak Counter Bar Stoll. In case anyone was looking for a similar. Love the style with the kitchen. It all looks amazing.

  4. About the fridge – from the before picture it appears to be on an angled wall between the laundry room and a door (to I don’t know where) – the door can be seen to the left in the bar/tv area.

    1. Yes thanks Kathy! I just didn’t get a good shot of the fridge area that wasn’t blurry bc that corner of the kitchen is darker. If you look at the before shot the fridge is in the same space we just got a new fridge.

  5. I love the kitchen but I’m stumped. I’ve looked at the pics 3 times and I’m wondering where the fridge is?

    1. I just didn’t get a good shot of it that wasn’t completely blurry thanks to the broken tripod. It’s in the same spot it was before if you look at the before shot.

  6. Wow!!! Maybe this post will change hubby’s mind. I am still living with oak cabinets and a dark green counter top. :( Did you paint them yourselves? Hubby is convinced that the grain will show through too much and then I will want to tear them out ;) Love your posts and thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Wendy they hired this project out and these cabinets don’t have a heavy grain thankfully. You can use a wood filler products to do a skim coat across the top of your cabinets and sand it down to fill in the grain. But I haven’t personally done that. Good luck convincing the hubby!

      1. In a previous home I had “painted” cabinets and purposely chose oak so that it would have wood grain and not be super smooth like a laminate. I liked that the grain lines made it look like wood without the darkness of stained wood.

  7. What a fresh new look you gave this kitchen! Really beautiful. I have two questions. When painting the cabinets was it sprayed on or hand painted, and what was the paint type and finish. Well, I guess I have three questions! The last one is for the pendant lights over the island, are they they type that convert a high hat into a pendant, or are they regular wired lights? This kitchen is very similar to the one at my vacation home and the before pictures are similar too. You have inspired me to make a change, but I don’t want to get new cabinets, and the power of paint is amazing!

    1. Hi Pattie, they hired this project out and the cabinets were sprayed with a professional paint sprayer. The paint was a satin finish in a high quality cabinet paint. The lights are normal pendants lights because there were pendants there before – thanks!

      1. Thanks so much for the response. I know you are busy and I appreciate that you took them time!

  8. Wow! This kitchen makeover is fabulous! I love the backsplash tile and I love the way it was also placed on the inside window curve! Looks so refreshing! BEAUTIFUL!

  9. From dull, dark and depressing to bright, bold and beautiful. Amazing transformation, thank you for the photos.

  10. I. Love. This! Everything about it we are about to redo our kitchen great ideas. We were contemplating quartz and I love it. I have fiestaware and its my fav dishware. We even plan on adding the curved breakfast bar. Now if I could only move my home from California to Florida gulf coast. Amazing Job!!!!

  11. Love the changes you made. I also have a home in Florida and thanks for giving me some ideas to lighten things up just wondering if your going to give us a look in the laundry room. Everything looks soooo pretty. Thanks again

  12. Of course, it all looks wonderful….love the ceiling light fixtures and I noticed that your parents even had the ceiling vents moved to the side wall , which to my mind would be better than blowing air all over food you were trying to prepare!

  13. Love the tray on top shelf. Where to find that? Interested in the stove top, how is this vented without the range hood.

  14. Lovely!! I’ve been looking for woven tray exactly like the one on the top shelf. You don’t happen to have a source, do you?

  15. Not only do I love the look of the open shelves, I love the convenience of not opening and closing cabinet doors to access my dishes. Am so happy with how this turned out!!
