How to make your own Holiday Embroidery Hoop art

As promised, I’m back with this easy tutorial on making your own Holiday Embroidery Hoop Art. Really, if I can do this anyone can, no sewing skills required – I swear!

Christmas Mantel Decor

First, you need to find a sweater that is big enough for your hoop. This was a woman’s medium sweater and with a lot of stretching (thanks to my little elves) I was able to make it fit. My hoop is 2 ft in diameter.

Pull it as tight as you can.

Next, I sketched out what I wanted to write.

I know this is the point where some of you may be thinking “help I can’t do handwriting like that, what do I do?” not to worry!

I know free handing is not for everyone (you should have spent more time doodling on your books in school…), so I’ll share a trick with you – when you stretch the sweater this tight it becomes fairly see thru. What you can do is go to dafont.com find a font you like, download it, write your message and print it out. Then you can just trace over your design right thru the sweater. This probably won’t work for really heavy knit sweaters so keep that in mind when you are on your sweater hunt.

I wrote mine in light brown marker so that it wouldn’t stand out too much if I made a mistake.

Next I got some regular old craft store yarn and a heavy duty needle.

All you do is just make little stitches, there is no right or wrong way to do this. I usually went thru and did a bunch of little stitches over a letter and then went back to make some bigger ones to add some thickness. Don’t worry about being perfect, we are going for a handmade look!

Stitch your whole design and you are done!

I hung mine with a piece of fishing line and tied some greenery and berries to the top, but this would also be cute topped off with a bow. I know this, because that’s what I had in mind until I realized I totally can’t tie a bow, like at all. Bow tying is my one of my crafty down falls.

The options are endless for this one, so have fun! Be sure to email me a photo if you make one, I’d love to see what you all come up with.

  3. Kelly- I am in love with this wreath. I am going to stop at Goodwill today and find myself a sweater and make one of these. I saw that Vanessa mentioned your site on FB yesterday and I linked over and I have now added you to my sidebar because I really like your style of decorating. I have made lots of projects with embroidery hoops, so I can’t wait to try this one. Hope you will stop by and say hi. I also host a link party each Tuesday evening at 8pm EST – would love to have you join in. Again, great job on the wreath and LOVE your mantle. -Judy
