Playroom Laminate Flooring Reveal

Tada! The flooring is finished in the playroom, and we love it so much! I can’t believe how much cleaner it feels in here without carpet. Not to mention how much easier lego pickup is – we just sweep them all up with a dustpan and broom, it’s awesome. Also as a bonus, my kids have become obsessed with sweeping up here; they actually fight over the dust mop. I may need to buy them feather dusters for their birthdays :)

Playroom laminate flooring

I wanted to share pics before we moved most of the furniture and rug back into the room so you can really see how pretty the flooring is. We are so happy with our choice from BuildDirect, they provided us with the flooring for this project. I love having the look of hardwood, but having the durability of laminate.

A room with a wood floor

As you can see, it really looks like hardwood. It has great texture and dimension and there are 8 different types of boards, so there really isn’t a pattern you can see. Here are a few up close shots of the flooring so you can really see the grain and detail.

To refresh your memory this is the Lamton White Dogwood from BuildDirect. You can read more info here about my how I made my selection, but BuildDirect Home Marketplace made the whole process so effortless! I love how much variation there is in the floor, because it really hides crumbs and dirt!

I recruited my Uncle Rick, who built our sunroom for us, to help me out with laying all the flooring. The Mr. has been crazy busy at work and this was such a massive project to try to tackle on our own. We replaced all the carpeting upstairs, which is about 1,200 sq feet of flooring, a little daunting to face alone!

This flooring was so easy to lay down. That is the other thing about laminate, there are really no special tools you need besides a good saw, mallet, and your hands. It’s a floating floor so it just snaps all together. Even the Mr. could do it and we all know how handy he is ;)

I’ll be showing you all the details of the completed room later this week, because it looks totally different than it used to and you might notice a few changes already (hello new wall hanging and drapes)! Here’s one last sneak peek.

  1. Hi Kelly, love the floors and all of your tutorials. I’ve read through most of your laminate flooring posts and wondered: which underlayment do you use? Do you also get it from BuildDirect? Would love a link if so. In your sunroom tutorial it sounded so easy and don’t want to reinvent the wheel trying to pick one, if I don’t have to. :)

Thanks and am enjoying the posts about your new house as well!

    1. Hi Kelly, I believe BuildDirect will recommend one for you when you put the flooring in your cart? Like it says at the bottom “you may also need this” but you can also call their help line they are super helpful and knowledgeable!

  2. It look awesome kelly. It goes great with the wall color and chair rail. Your kiddos are adorable. Take them up on the sweeping, it may not last long. Have a great rest of the week. Jennie

  3. Love the room. The floor is beautiful. Can you tell me where you got your drapes and rod? Need them!!

  4. Please tell us how it sounds when you walk on it. The one thing I don’t like about laminate is that it sounds hollow or clicky. Please fill us in. Thanks so much. It looks great!

    1. Hey Alice so I think it sounds pretty normal walking on it. Our wood floors downstairs are actually a lot more creaky sounding but we have moisture issues living on the lake. We deal with a lot more settling and contracting and expanding of the wood in our home but so far so good!

  5. Looks Clean & Crisp ~ just in time for spring!

As for any dust bunnies . . . just put mops on the kids feet! They will love knowing they are helping to keep the room clean for their Mom!

  6. It looks gorgeous, as does everything you do. The colour of the floor is really nice. Rustic and elegant. My husband suggested we take the carpet out of my craft room and replace it with laminate. Might just do it after seeing how nice your room came out. And after 3 years of living with the lovely faint stains from a bottle of bright yellow, dishwasher safe, paint that went everywhere when I shook it without the lid being on tight a few years ago!

    1. Oh no! Yes paint would definitely clean off easier on laminate than carpet. We have actually been enjoying more crafts up here because I’m not as worried about spilling.

  7. Would you please show us a picture of how the stairs turned out? I’m curious how your uncle did the edges.

Looks beautiful and one more question….is your cabinet color the same as your downstairs cabinet? I just love it!

    Keep up the great work!

    1. Blog post coming soon Cindy! I promise to show all the details and talk about the process :) This cabinet is actually a different color, I’ll look it up and include it in the next post!

  8. Our entire house is hardwood, except our master bedroom. I’m thinking this might be the way to go, as it is above the garage and we’ve been hesitant to do it because of the cold. We are in the Midwest also (Chicago suburbs). Is your playroom above the garage and if so, did you put some underlayment for cold under it?

    1. Our playroom is above the garage and it made me nervous, but it actually doesn’t seem any colder than our carpeting did. There is an underlayment underneath it but we also have a large area rug up here that helps too.

  9. Looks great! We too have gone crazy with Pergo laminate flooring, great room, dining room, den and master. Heard on the news last night that laminate flooring form Lumber Liqidator was made in China and causes Cancer. Thankfully ours was not. Hope yours was not either. Looking forward to seeing the finished room.

  10. Your room is awesome! I especially love the floors. You will love the cleaning part too>>>so much easier than carpet.

  11. Lovely! I was just visiting with my daughter yesterday and she was showing me a bedroom where she wants to remove the carpet and put down laminate with the hand scraped look!
