The weather has turned colder here in MI so I’m starting to think about surviving the looong winter! Time to stock up on the essentials – good books, warm outerwear, great skincare, and nail polish? In other words, it’s another random week here on Friday Feels.
First up what I’m reading this week. If you’ve been following for a while you know I’m a huge fan of Fredrik Backman. His books Beartown, and A Man Called Ove are among my faves. He has a new book out called Anxious People: A Novel. I’m about halfway through and I’m really enjoying it. It’s a hard book to describe because it’s about a bank robbery/hostage situation gone wrong but not really…It’s actually about the different characters being held hostage and their personal stories. It’s funny and heartbreaking all at once.
I also bought the new Ken Follett book. I loved the Kingsbridge series – The Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, and A Column of Fire. The latest is the prequel to the series –The Evening and The Morning. I haven’t started it yet, but my mom is reading it and has given it her stamp of approval! She has proclaimed it’s the best one yet.
While I’m reading I’ll be sipping my coffee out of these cute Harry Potter mugs. I usually buy a few new mugs every fall as my kids are in charge of emptying the dishwasher, and we lose a few mugs/plates/bowls along the way. We are huge Harry Potter nerds in this family so these are perfect for hot chocolate all winter long. Too bad for the Mr. – he lost rock paper scissors and got stuck with the Slytherin one!
I accidentally ripped the sleeve off of my winter coat last year. (don’t ask it was a little DIY gone wrong…Charlie was the only witness and he’s not talking) So I found a great deal on this North Face Gotham jacket. It’s really warm without looking too bulky. I bought it in black but it comes in several colors. It’s been perfect for those freezing weekend soccer games. It’s on major sale right now ($100 off) but not available in a ton of sizes so act quickly if you are in the market!
To go with my new coat I’m on the hunt for a new beanie. I love Gigi Pip hats (I have one of their straw ones for summer and it’s my fave). They have so many adorable beanies. I actually have 2 in my online cart at the moment, and can’t quite decide which one to go with.
It’s hard to believe it’s time for a 2021 planner! These are my absolute fave 5 years running now. I geek out when they reveal the new patterns. I snagged the Strawberry Fields pattern this year, and added a few of their notebooks to my order too. I’ve been trying to keep a gratitude journal/list every day. I’m hoping these pretty notebooks keep me motivated.
My daughter and I were at Target this weekend and she threw this Olive and June nail polish in the cart (the hazards of taking a tween to Target). This was a happy accident because I’m OBSESSED! They have this special little holder thingy (the technical term) that makes it so much easier to use your non-dominant hand. It actually works with most nail polish bottles. The Olive and June nail polish has a wider flat brush which makes it so much easier to apply.
Alright, last up as I get closer and closer to 40 I’m getting a little bit more serious about my skincare. There are a ton of beauty bloggers I follow who swear by this Skinceuticals C E Ferulic with L-Ascorbic Acid and Vitamin C serum. I have had it in my online cart for months, and when I ran out of the serum I was using I decided to try it. Listen, is it expensive? Yes. Does it smell like hotdogs? Absolutely. Do I feel like my skin looks the best it has in a long time? 100%! I’ve been using it in the morning for about a month now, and I have really noticed a difference in my skin. The good news is a little goes a long way. I use 4 little drops every morning so this bottle should last a long time.
I also picked up their Retinol 0.3 cream and use that at night. So far this has been a really good combo for my 37-year-old face. As I deplete my current skincare line I will be trying out a few more SkinCeuticals products so I will keep you posted!
I think that’s it for this week! Happy Weekend and Happy Halloween!
If you like Skinceuticals, try The Ordinary. I’ve used both, and The Ordinary works just as well for a much smaller price. Basically, I’ve switched all of my skincare to The Ordinary. With its price point, you can try many different things to see what works best. I turned 50 this year, and I’m never going back to super pricey skincare. I’m about to finish a book so I’m going to check out the Fredrik Backman book. I loved A Man Called Ove.
Thanks Sharon! I have two products by the Ordinary but haven’t been a fan. I should try a few more I guess!
I am currently listening to Follett’s latest on audio book, and it’s engrossing. I highly recommend!
I’ve really been enjoying it as well!
I love your blog! I love your decorating style. We are building our house on the Outer Banks NC. It will be our forever house. Cabinet are already installed. We went with Satin nickel bar pulls. I wanted chrome but the lady at cabinet shop and my contractor said it would show fingerprints. So I went with satin nickel. I want my faucets to be chrome. Is that going to look bad? I had read you can mix metals. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
You can definitely mix metals in fact I think that makes things look more custom!
Does Charlie love your hot dog face? I’m dying over here. :) :) :)
haha he does! He definitely sniffs my face trying to figure it out lol!
So glad you mentioned the Olive and June nail polish – I’ve seen so many adds for their gorgeous colors and will definitely see if my Target carries that brand! Also, always love your book suggestions and as we hunker in for the long winter months I will add Anxious People to my reading list. I agree with Dori – buy both beanies for yourself – besides I’m sure your daughter will borrow one! :-)
Have a great weekend! Stay warm!
Haha I like your advice!! I just got my Olive and June kit in the mail and I love it!!
As usual, love your Friday Feels post!!! Anxious People is now on my reading list, and if I didn’t live in Florida I would definitely be ordering that coat!!! So cute! Hope you have a great weekend!
Enjoy the FL sunshine!
Very helpful post, Kelly. I was just getting ready to hunt for a planner and the Poppy tool is a perfect stocking stuffer for my DIL. The beanies are SO adorable and you should definitely get both for yourself and maybe even one or two for your darling tween. Have a wonderful weekend! :)
Thanks so much, Dori, I did end up getting both ha! Couldn’t resist and yes the poppy is a perfect stocking stuffer!
I was introduced to the Skinceuticals retinol about 15 years ago at the Mirror Lake Inn spa in Lk. Placid. I have used it ever since. I find that this is somehow more effective than a Retin A I have used – now sure why, but it does work better and gives quick results.
I have been SO impressed with their products! Glad I finally splurged.
Got the coat and the skin care, I too have a Gigi Pip summer hat and I love it. I’ve got a bid head and her hats actually fit me. Can’t wait to get everything I ordered, thanks for the recommendations.
Oh yay I hope you love them!!
