Big Girl Bedroom Reveal – Finally

I’m finally sharing my girlie’s new all grown up (well 5 year old grown up anyways) de-pinkified big girl bedroom reveal.

Did I say de-pinkified? Ok, so she wasn’t ready to let go of ALL the pink, but now it’s sophisticated big girl “magenta”.

Want to know what her favorite part of the room is? That would be a $2.99 lamp from Goodwill, really? I mean there is so much other better stuff!

It’s not the brilliantly spray painted bed..

or the fun painted signs on her wall…

not her fun memory board where she can display her favorite things..

or even her hilarious alarm clock that oinks when it’s time to start the day…

Nope, she is all about her purple lamp, because it’s a magic lamp! I mean a genie who sounds suspiciously like Robin Williams doesn’t exactly pop out and grant wishes but it’s pretty cool none the less…

We picked it out at Goodwill not knowing it held such magical powers.

It was a lovely fake brass, so we hit up the hardware store to pick up some purple spray paint (specifically picked out by my daughter, it was a toss up between that and neon orange for a minute, phew – let me tell you taking a 5 year old to a paint store can be a dangerous thing). So I got the lamp home, sprayed it up, and immediately brought it up to her room  waited the suggested 24 hours before handling…

and then tried to turn it on…

there was no switch…

no little screwy knob thing…

no string to pull – nothing…

really I just spent $2.99 on a lamp that doesn’t turn on?

Then my girlie touched the base and it “magically” turned on! Seriously the look on her face was priceless. It was better than the clapper (and now, if you are like me, you are singing “clap on, clap off, clap on, clap off, the clapper” or you know…now you are, sorry)!

Basically, for her, the room is all about the lamp, it’s purple, magic, and now she can stay up late reading books.

Preferably Berenstein Bears, and preferably when her crazy blogger mom isn’t driving her nuts trying to photograph her every move…

Maybe I should go back a minute and show you the before. Remember when I said taking your kid to a paint store can be dangerous? This is what happens when you let a 3 year old pick a paint chip.

Bubblegum pink! Not gonna lie, this was not my favorite. I love how fresh and fun the new aqua color is, it is so much more her too. Let’s swing on over to the other side of the room.

Our pet goldfish Dorothy makes the perfect bookend. Bonus – my sweet pea loves that Dorothy has books to read now, she even rotates them daily for Dorothy so she doesn’t get bored, love that kid!

I’ll be sharing some more specific DIY posts about some of the fun projects in the room, but for now I just wanted to share the big reveal!

Ok, can’t resist one last shot of the bedding, think the Mr. would go for this in our room?

You can see how I made the cute pom pom quilt here.

I have to say this may be my new favorite room in our house, it is just so fun!

Helpful Info – Duvet and Sheets from PB Teen, Wall Color is Blanket by Valspar (which you can find at Lowes)

UPDATE – I had the paint color color matched at a local paint store and after hearing from a reader that it was quite a bit brighter than what my room was I did some research. I brought the paint can back to the store and they ran the numbers the color is actually A Touch of Green NOT Blanket! Read more about it and the rest of my paint colors here.

UPDATE # 2 – We all know I have decorating ADD so her room looks completely different now. Come check out what her room looks like now that she is 6! Take the tour here

  4. I just found this and it is exactly what I want to do for my daughter’s room. I have been eyeing the bedding from PotteryBarn. I just need to find a headboard. Her room (well her new room will) has white wainscoting on the bottom and I was wondering what color to paint the walls. Wanted a light teal. Thanks so much!

  11. I love this bedroom for your daughter. I am sitting here right now trying to decide on bedding for my daughters new room and trying to decide between 2 different PB Teen sets. I love this room! I would also like to know where you got the art work? I can’t see any information on your blog so I am sorry if i am missing it. Thank you,

  12. LOVE this room!!! So many of the ideas that I have for my own daughter’s room (turning 7 this year). The picture frames, sprayed bedframe,… Did I say I LOVE it? Anyway, I have been searching for red/aqua paisley fabric or bedding… but this pb duvet might do the trick. Is there any true red in the duvet or is it all pink. I have a cute red rug that I’m hoping to use in the room, so am hoping I can pull that colour out. Thanks!

  13. I got a sample of blanket by valspar and it is very green. Did your paint guy make it 50% lighter?

    1. oh eek, I’m not sure Angelina! I just showed him my paint chip and he did his thing, I will say it had a tinge of green but it is most definitely a light aqua color. That would be a good option if you think it is too green. Good luck!

  14. I love the room. I am doing my 3 yr old girl’s big girl room and am modeling it off your room.

  15. Kelli~ You did a fabulous job on your daughter’s room. What sizes are the prints from etsy? I looked on etsy but wasn’t able to locate them. Thanks so much!!

  16. I am doing the frames and signs over my daughter’s crib. I was just wondering how you attached the string to the green frame to hang the letters on cardstock. Your daughter’s room is beautiful and has inspired me to create something similar.

  17. I bought my 3 yr old daughter the same duvet cover from PBTeen and wasn’t sure what color to paint her walls. They are currently pink as your daughters before was. I buy all my paint at Lowes so I am happy to go find this color! Thanks for all the ideas!

  18. Love this room! My 4 year old is getting a big girl room and I wish I could give her a teal room. She wants pink though (her current room is green, so it’s due) but I’m going to balance it out with board and batten in white. We recently looked at PB Teen for a comforter – they have some great ones! I’m over the baby stuff and love how you kept her room simple (unlike so many on Pinterest) but good for a little girl too. It’s hard to balance some days.

    1. Thanks so much Megan, it is hard to strike the right balance for a 4 year old with her own opinions – good luck!

  19. I found your blog through Migonis home. Your daughters room is stunning. Did you make the ‘fun’ frame yourself? If so, what are the white letters hung on. I was not sure if it is fabric or cardstock, Thank you.

    1. Hi Jennie – thanks! I found an old picture frame at a vintage store and painted it. The letters are just hung on brown cardstock with little clothespins. Easiest project ever :)

  20. I love this room! I wanna sleep there, and if you looked at my funky furniture blog you would see why! The bed Frame is fabulous and the comforter really sets it off. Great job

  21. I absolutely love this and am thrilled our son to be 11 year old loves the concept as well. She and our 5 year old daughter share a room and its been a nightmare trying to find something that compliments both age groups. Rock star results. Seriously love this.

  22. Could you please tell me the name of the PB bedding? I cant seem to find it on their website. By the way….the room is adorable and my youngest daughter Isabelle, wants to try to copy it. :) Thanks so much for posting it!

  27. You may have already said this but I was having a hard time finding where you found the bedding (other than the cute pom pom quilt. =) I love the colors in the bedspread mixed with the pink and white polkadots. Thanks for sharing. I needed some inspiration for my girls room.

  28. Hi! I am in love with this room! Are the sheets bright pink or bright magenta through PBteen? Thanks!

    1. I’m 30 too and I sneak in there sometimes to hang out :) I was lucky enough to get the nightstand as a hand me down from my mom when she redecorated, it is from Pottery Barn, I just changed the knob out with a fun teal one.

  29. Phew…it took a while to scroll down so I could comment! Doesn’t surprise me because this room is INSANELY AMAZING!!! Holy cow you did such a fabulous job and those painted signs???? I am in love! Pinned! Thank you so much for sharing your talents!

  30. I love this room! I am currently re-doing my three year old daughters room. She is a fiery little girl and needs a room to match her personality.
I am wondering what colour spray paint you used on the bed? She has a white metal daybed right now and it needs a little “spice”!
I am torn about what wall colour to use though…light aqua or Autumn Haze by Glidden. Her room feels to dark and small right now and we need to brighten it up :)

  31. I love everything about this room!! And that your goldfish is named Dorothy :)

  32. Beautiful, just beautiful… I have one question though… The Pom poms do you dust them?or leave them. I have some hanging up and have realised they are dusty!! What to do?

  35. Everything about this room is perfect! I love all the colors you used. I am having a link party on sunday (starts saturday at 6pm) please come and link this up.

  36. What a lucky little girl! This room is so adorable! I just wish I had a girl so I could replicate it. I guess I need to get creative and find a way to do something like this for three little boys. Thanks so much for sharing! Enjoy your day!

  37. I think we might be kindred spirits. lol I JUST purchased this PB Teen bedding no less than an hour ago (because I have a 15% off coupon that expires tonight!), and I was wondering if I had made the wrong decision…started browsing Pinterest and came across a pin of your room. LOVED it and stopped over to see the reveal. Lo and behold, there was MY bedding! Great taste. ;) Then I saw your pink poms, and I just had to laugh because I made almost IDENTICAL poms for my girls’ room over a year ago. Ha! We were definitely meant to be friends. I still have a few finishing details to work out in my girls’ room, but I hope it comes out as lovely as yours!

  38. Such a sweet and colorful little room. I like that you involved your daughter in the process. And I’m loving the pink iron bed! (Of course, the magic lamp comes in at a close second.)

  39. Love it! Makes me wish I had a little girl to decorate for (well, I already wished that…) . Love the bright paisley bedding and the art you made. We live on a lake too so I need to make some lakey signs soon. Thanks for the tour!!

  40. I LOVE this room! I’ve been looking for a color like the one you used on your walls for my son. What color is that?

  41. This is totally pinned and goes straight to my Sunday Inspirations weekly post on my blog :D. It is so lovely and cute. I certainly want to make something like that to my little Emma some day!!!.

    Thanks for sharing!

  42. Oh goodness, Kelly! I love this room. I adore the pink the bed, the gallery wall is gorgeous, and I’m still crushing on the fabulous art you made! You are so talented! That’s one lucky little girl!!

  43. where did you get the bedding? We are going to be re-doing my 11 year old daughters room
and cant find anything, but love the one you have for your daughter.

  44. Your daughter’s “big girl” room is perfect and the story of the “magic” Goodwill lamp made me smile. I have a “magic” lamp that came to me when my uncle passed away…same sort of thing…brought it home, cleaned it up, replaced the bulb (and the shade), plugged it in….nothing….until I touched it when I tried to lift it up to see what was wrong.

Having a little magic in your life is a wonderful thing… especially the magic comes from the time that the two of you spent creating the wonderful place that will be the backdrop of her life for the next few years. WELL DONE! xo, Kimberly

    1. Thanks Anna, although I’m sure she would trade your daughter in a heart beat for her amazing loft bed!

  45. Looks amazing – and now I want a magic lamp and an oinking alarm clock! And you ain’t seen nothing til you see the colors my girls chose for their rooms! I need sunglasses when I enter – but I just pat myself on the back for letting them do their thing! Hopefully, their retinas won’t burn from the brightness!

That bed is gorgeous – mom of year award to you!

    1. ha ha ha, do they need sleep masks at night? I’m sure once she is a teenager I won’t be able to “help” her along with her color choices!

  46. Kelly, this room is BEAUTIFUL!! I love the collage above the bed…and the colors. You did an amazing job. I am your newest follower. :)

  47. I love this room. We are building a house and this is just how my daughter has pictured her room. We already have the quilt and are trying to decide if we should paint the walls a light gray or a color, I love the aqua color! I found a darling fun little painted cabinet that matches the bedding at TJ MAX was thinking about painting her white bed pink … love the pink bed. Can you tell me what brand and color spray paint you used for the bed. It is a perfect fit!

  48. I love the room!! The wall color, bedding, frames, all of it! We have been trying to get my daughter excited about moving and I cannot wait to show her these pictures after school. I think a room re-do will be a great inspiration. Looking forward to your tutorial about the pom-pom blanket. My daughter saw them in the Pottery Barn catalog, but I think I will have a hard time convincing the hubby to buy all of her bedding from there! Thank you for all of the great ideas. :)

    1. I had the same thing, I compromised buying the sheets and duvet cover but I knew I could make the quilt :)

  49. This looks lovely.
We are about to move and my 4 year old will be getting a new updated room – love this bed!

  50. This is SUCH an amazing room Kelly! I love the bed and the bedding but I think those signs you painted are my favorite! Beautiful job – I’m sure your daughter will love it for years to come!

  51. I am in the process of updating my 8 year old daughters room. We are building her a full size day bed. We have to figure out how to convert an armoire into a desk. I can’t wait for it to be done.

  52. Wow! I found this post from Pinterest and loved it so much! There are so many similarities with my daughter’s room, it’s too weird. Her room is already painted a pale aqua and we have the exact same bed (in white…now I’m thinking about painting it!). My girl’s name is Chloe, too! We moved a year ago and her poor room has been very unfinished. It was shabby chic in the old house and we’ve been wanting to do a brighter, funkier update to fit her personality. She is very fiery, shabby chic did not fit at all. :) Thanks for the idea about painting the bed and congrats on the room. It looks awesome!

    1. Thanks Michelle, so glad you hopped over from Pinterest :) I would love to do a shabby chic thing but bright and funky is more my daughter’s taste too!

    1. Thanks so much Heather! I kind of want it for my own too, she always kicks me out at bedtime ha

  53. WOW!! Kelly that is so absolutely adorable! The transformation is amazing and it is such a fun and sweet space.Definitely a room that will grow with her too. Well done! :-)

  54. Love, love, love!!! What a great room! Where on earth did you find that fabulous duvet? I’ve been searching for something like this… that is in stock, not discontinued, or only available in every other color but the one my daughter likes lol.

  55. Kelly –

What a special place you two created together! And I live the magic lamp story. Not sure what broke my heart the most — your daughter’s precious face or the fact that she rotates the books for Dorothy! Too cute! Love it and pinned it too!

And it was so wonderful to meet you this past weekend!

    :) Linda

  56. I have the exact same duvet, throw pillow, curtains, and bean bag in my daughter’s room. Now all I need to do is paint. Can you share your paint color with me? I was looking at ‘swimming’ by Sherwin Williams, but would like to know what you used.

    1. You have good taste Kim ha :) Sorry the paint was a custom mix so I don’t know the color, but go lighter than you think if you try aqua!

  57. Kelly not only is the room so pretty that I want it for my way too old self but I loved reading your post. You make me laugh and smile and that’s what a blog post should be. Chloe’s adorable and your pics are great. Thanks for sharing them.

    Hugs…Tracy @ Cotton Pickin Cute

  58. Thanks for the post loved the room. I have a 5old granddaughter who would love the magic lamp. I now have to see if I can find one for her. But I seem to think I had one in one of my many boxes not unpacked. Loved all the talent you show. Thanks again. Dee

  59. I don’t even know what to say…it is absolutely stunning. Can I move in? Suddenly I want to be five all over again!

  60. I love this!!! I did my little girls room a few months back and sometimes I just have to go sit in it I just love it!! Isn’t it great to have a Little girly you get to live vicariously through?!!! So beautiful! Your one talented lady!!

    1. Yes, I’m always asking her if we can play in there, it is just so fun and cheery :)

  61. Love this room and the fun colors! I also love iron beds for little girls rooms. My favorite is the duvet though–where did you get it? It looks like PB! I shared this on my FB–great work!

    1. Oh I wish I could, it was a custom mix at a local paint store, sorry! I will tell you aqua is a little tricky, go a lot lighter than you think to avoid it being neonish.

      1. Amen!!! It is tricky- that’s why I was asking :) I have an office that fits the neon description after its coat of paint this weekend :)

        1. oh I just found the paint chip the custom mix was based off – Blanket by Valspar. My local paint store matched it so it should be pretty close? Good luck!

          1. Hey Kim, hmm the paint chip I have says just Blanket… it does have a bit of grey in it but it is much brighter on the walls than the chip. Good luck!

  62. It’s all so wonderful I can’t pick out a favorite thing. I can understand her fascination with the lamp though. ;) The colors her room are such happy colors. And I especially like how she gives fishy new reading material. :)

  63. Kelly…IT IS BEAUTIFUL!! So many cute details. My favorite part of this post is that Dorothy gets to read different books, precious! :)

    1. Thanks Sonya! She is such a sweet kid, now if she would just be that nice to her little brother ha :)

  64. Ok, I love it all but MY favorite is the white blanket with the pom pom balls folded on the end of the bed!!! Will you share with me where to find it?

  65. So adorable. And I love the story about the lamp, so funny! My favorite is the pink bed. I’ve been thinking of painting my daughter’s hand-me-down dresser that same color and you have me thatmuchcloser to taking the leap on it!
