Lake House Navy Planked Office

Today I’m sharing another fave room in my parent’s lake house (I think it’s possible I’ve claimed them all as my favorites). This time we are headed over to the office. We had originally intended on this room being a guest bedroom, but they had to move the staircase during framing and it is a bit smaller than we anticipated. The guest room moved to the basement (I’ll share that soon, don’t worry) and this became a cozy office. So let’s take a tour of this lake house navy planked office.

Our inspiration for this room was this painting of my grandfather. My mom has had it for a long time with no place to put it so we were determined to use it in this new house. It feels so special because he is the reason we all live on the lake in the first place.

My grandparents were from Chicago, but they built a cottage on our lake the year my mom was born. It’s actually still here in another bay and my aunt and uncle live there now.

My mom spent every summer of her life on this lake (as did I) so it feels meaningful to have him in this space.

With the darker tones in this painting I thought this would be a fun space to go for it with a darker color.

We wanted to add a bit more texture in this space as well, so we had all the walls planked in v groove boards. I chose the same deep moody navy that we used on the mudroom cabinets.

It makes this space feel so cozy and masculine. The lake view just pops as well!

Since this room has a masculine old school vibe, I thought a tufted leather chair would be perfect. We added a little woven footstool, and it’s the ideal space to curl up with a book on a rainy day.

This whole room actually feels like an ode to my grandparents as this antique secretary was once theirs as well.

The details on it are just beautiful even if the finish is a bit well loved in spots. My mom put some great old family photos on display in the cabinet.

The antique chair it came with is perfect too. My grandmother embroidered it which makes it extra special. I will admit it did have a plastic cover on it (once upon a time their sofa had one too…) and we removed it to let the embroidery shine. This rooms stays relatively grandkid free so hopefully it will be safe!

I liked this simple geometric rug to ground the space, and to add a touch of modern design to the antiques.

A few vintage inspired boat prints with unique brass frames are a fun contrast with the walls.

We also added another portrait with this guy here.

This room just has such a lovely feeling to it, being surrounded by family heirlooms. It’s really a nostalgic and special space.

  1. Love how this house is evolving, thank you for sharing! I am curious how your parents downsized, was it difficult for them to get rid of it all? I love the sentimental pieces they kept.
I am in the process of downsizing and am struggling, any tips?

    1. Every room in your parents’ cottage is beautiful! Can you give any information on the planking that you used on the walls in the office? I am looking for something similar to put on the sloped ceiling in our primary bedroom.
